Não é o mesmo que capitão de navio. O timoneiro lida com a direção física do navio, enquanto o capitão é o líder geral e toma decisões mais abrangentes sobre a navegação e a gestão da embarcação.

Sempre indica o movimento de um lado para outro, como "sacudir", "se revirar", "se agitar".

"I hurled a lance at him. The soldier has hurled the bomb into the enemy gun post. The angry mob hurled rocks at the police."

Com força ou violência contra um alvo.

"The carpenter flung aside his tools in a rage. Someone had flung a brick through the window. The child flung the ball across the room"

De forma impulsiva e descontrolada sem um objetivo claro.

He tossed the ball to his friend. The cat tossed the ball in the air.

Quando feito de forma leve, como num jogo.

"The teacher threw out the trash."

Quando feito de forma geral, sem especificar a intenção, estado emocional ou situação.
